Mbappé informs PSG that he will not renew his contract, says French newspaper

Striker Kylyan Mbappé has formally communicated to Paris Saint-Germain that he will not renew his contract, which expires on June 30, 2024, and the club is already planning a sale so that the player does not leave for free, reported the newspaper “L’Equipe” this Monday (12).

The French star revealed his decision through a letter received by PSG this afternoon, in which he states that he will not exercise the option to renew the bond for another season, according to the newspaper.

PSG sources assured “L’Equipe” that Mbappé will not leave for free, which is why, if the player does not express a willingness to renew, he will be transferred in the coming weeks.

“L’Equipe” details that PSG were “surprised” and showed “incomprehension” by the fact that Mbappé had sent the letter at this time, so much so that there was no legal obligation for the player to express that intention to be free on June 30 from 2024.

The fact is that the optional season would only take place if Mbappé expressed his willingness to sign in writing before July 31. If he had kept silent, he would have been free within a year. The player had not yet spoken about his future and, at the National Union of Professional Footballers awards ceremony, on May 28, he limited himself to saying: “I still have a year on my contract, I will be here next season”.

The striker renewed for two seasons with PSG, with one optional, just a year ago, when his departure to Real Madrid was practically certain.

Captain of the French national team, Mbappé later admitted that he even received a phone call from the country’s president, Emmanuel Macron, who convinced him to stay in French football.

There was also strong pressure from the Qatari club, who wanted to keep one of the best players in the world on their payroll during the World Cup.

PSG’s season has not been very happy for the player, as the club won the French Championship with a performance below expectations, which could cost coach Christophe Galtier his job.

Above all, PSG were knocked out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 by Bayern Munich and showed that their competitiveness at European level is not progressing.

PSG, with Messi out and supposedly looking to get rid of Neymar, wanted to make Mbappé the cornerstone of their reconstruction, based on more French players and, above all, young people thirsting for titles.
