Since taking office, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, has held meetings with 43 foreign ministers, heads of government or representatives of international organizations. He gives an average of almost one meeting a day, not counting the agendas he had accompanying President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
The president was elected promising to restore the country to a prominent position on the international stage. “Brazil has returned”, declared Lula in his first agenda after the elections, at COP 27 in November, even before taking office.
Mauro Vieira was in Germany this Saturday (18) and Sunday (19), representing Brazil at the Munich Security Conference. In a day and a half, he had 21 bilateral meetings, 18 of which with foreign ministers.
With the European Union minister, Josep Borrel, and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleb, the central issue was the conflict with Russia and the authorities understood the Brazilian position.
With the Norwegian chancellor, Anniken Huitfeldt, they discussed the challenges of the Israel-Palestine question, in light of the 30 years of the peace agreement signed in Oslo.
In general, foreign government representatives are interested in learning about the new government’s policies, especially in the environmental area.
In early March, Mauro Vieira will travel to India for the G-20 ministerial meeting, where he is expected to meet with the new Chinese chancellor, Qin Gang.
