Mauro Cid wants to close the deal with the PF; Moraes needs to validate agreement

Army lieutenant colonel Mauro Cid must close a plea bargain with the Federal Police. The former aide-de-camp of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) took a statement of intent to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) last Wednesday (6). In the document, delivered to Minister Alexandre de Moraes’ office, he formally expressed his intention to close the agreement.

For the agreement to be valid, Moraes needs to accept and approve the term. The Federal Public Ministry must also be consulted about the agreement. To this end, Cid is expected to bring new and different facts to those already reported by him in previous statements to the PF. In addition to the jewelry case, Cid is suspected of trying to illegally sell other gifts received by Bolsonaro on official trips. The vehicles tried to contact Mauro Cid’s lawyer, Cézar Bittencourt, but there was no response.

Another situation that can be clarified by the former aide-de-camp is his alleged involvement in negotiations regarding a possible invasion of the National Justice Council (CNJ) system by hacker Walter Delgatti Neto.

In light of these issues, a statement from Mauro Cid is also considered important for Bolsonaro’s future, since, as aide-de-camp, he could have been a key player in several of the cases in which suspicions were raised against the former president.

Furthermore, the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPMI) on January 8th also intends to enter into a plea bargain agreement with Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, after authorization given by the Senate’s lawyers. The request to make the statement was presented by rapporteur Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA).

Earlier versions of Cid’s defense

On August 18, lawyer Cézar Bittencourt even stated that Cid would confess to the court how he participated in the alleged scheme to sell jewelry received as a gift by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). However, hours later, the military’s defense changed its speech and said that the investigator’s statement would only be about the Rolex watch.

The change of version, however, occurred after lawyers representing Bolsonaro contacted him following the publication of the hypothetical confession in the press.

Bitencourt denied that he had been under any pressure and said that he changed the version from a confession to a clarification about “just the watch”, after having reflected to “check how far you can go”.

Days later, on September 1st, Cid gave a statement to the PF, for more than 10 hours, about the alleged diversion of jewelry and gifts received by the former president for sale in the United States. But the military’s defense stated that the former aide-de-camp did not make accusations against former president Jair Bolsonaro in the statements given to the PF.

Mauro Cid has been in prison since May 3 after being the target of a Federal Police operation investigating the insertion of false data into vaccination cards against Covid-19. He is also responsible for seven other cases, including the purchase of Saudi jewelry and possible involvement in the events of January 8th.
