Nintendo achieved a 50% increase in its sales in the first quarter of its fiscal year (April to June 2023) compared to the same period last year. In a report released on the 3rd, the Japanese company attributes the result to the success of “Super Mario Bros. The Movie” and the release of “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”.

According to the balance sheet, Nintendo had US$ 3.22 billion (R$ 15.7 billion) in gross revenue in the quarter, generating an operating profit of US$ 1.29 billion (R$ 6.29 billion) in the period – an increase of 82.4% in relation to the same period last year.

The great reception of the new “Zelda” at its launch, last May 12, indicated that the company’s results this quarter would be encouraging. That feeling was borne out by the 18.5 million copies of the game sold to date.

More surprising was the impact of Mario animation on the company’s revenue. Despite the phenomenon having already been observed in games adapted for other media (cases of “The Last of Us”, “The Witcher” and “Cyberpunk 2077”, for example), Nintendo saw the film released on April 6 -and watched by more than 168 million people– impacting a diversity of products. Games with the character had growth in sales.

  • 1.67 million copies sold in the period of “Mario Kart 8 Deluxe”, released more than six years ago;

  • W190% growth in the collection with titles for mobile devices (“Super Mario Run” and “Mario Kart Tour”, for example) and royalties, reaching US$ 222 million (R$ 1.1 billion) in revenue.

  • Increase of 13.9% in salesendas of Nintendo Switch compared to the previous year, with 3.91 million units sold.

This last number is especially impressive considering that the device should reach its obsolescence in less than two years, at the latest. Some publications point out that the Switch successor will hit the market in the second half of next year.

Officially, however, the company shows no signs that it intends to abandon its current console.

“With respect to hardware, as we continue to look at the appeal of the Nintendo Switch, we’re looking to not just put one system in every household, but several in every household, or even one for every person,” Nintendo said in the report.

“Another goal is to constantly release new options so that more consumers will continue to play the Nintendo Switch for even longer, allowing us to maximize hardware sales.”

In any case, the unusual success of a platform at the end of its cycle generates a strategic advantage for Nintendo. The profit obtained now is crucial for the company to be able to maintain its spending on marketing and research and development that the future console will inevitably demand. Good for Mario and his gang.

game tip, new or old, for you to test

vampire hunters

(PRAÇA)

If you liked “Vampire Survivors” you should try the game created by Gamecraft Studios, from Belo Horizonte. As the name already gives away, the game is inspired by the formula of the title that went viral in 2022, but adapts it to an FPS (first-person shooter) with aesthetics reminiscent of games from the 1990s, such as “Doom”. The game manages to reproduce the addictive looping of “Vampire Survivors”, with short matches and constant improvements, giving that “just one more round” feeling that players know so well.
