Marina Silva signals priority to the carbon market – 09/03/2023 – Panel

The Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, highlighted the priority of regulating the carbon market in a way that is accessible to small traders.

In conversation with FercomercioSP, he agreed that it was necessary to include simple measures in the regulation, such as replacing air conditioning and refrigerators with more efficient and economical devices, or installing solar panels.

The carbon market is the sale of greenhouse gas emission reduction quotas to companies or individuals who want to offset their emissions.

For José Goldemberg, president of the FercomercioSP Sustainability Council and former Minister of the Environment, it is urgently necessary to create mechanisms that encourage the purchase of these credits.

“It’s no use having the market, there’s credit, if it doesn’t reach the commercial level. It becomes a rhetorical thing”, he assesses.

According to him, the stimuli in Brazil today are still very far from the common citizen. He cites as an example a line of financing from the BNDES, but which only covers projects above R$ 20 million, far above the possibility of small traders.

Countries like Portugal, for example, have set emission reduction targets for companies, which can compensate by buying carbon credits. One of FercomercioSP’s suggestions is to speed up international agreements so that foreign companies can buy credits from Brazilian companies.

The regulation depends on the approval of a law by the National Congress. Several projects have already been filed. The most advanced is reported by deputy Carla Zambelli (PL-SP).
