Marina Silva says that part of Congress is “denying” about the environment

With a ministry emptied of functions and having a clash between one of its bodies, Ibama, and another strategic for the government, Petrobras, Minister Marina Silva, of the Environment, acknowledged that she does not have “political strength and enough votes” in Congress to pass on agendas of interest, and that the base of the “broad front” formed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) does not walk united on this issue.

The minister says that there is a lack of “understanding” on the part of deputies and senators about the problem of climate change and deforestation, whom she classified as “denier”. According to Marina Silva, the president did what was possible to veto and restore the powers of the ministry, but that is not enough in relation to Congress.

“Unfortunately, the government’s base is more or less 150 deputies for issues of the environment, human rights, indigenous issues, women’s rights and youth and culture policies,” he said in an interview with the newspaper O Globo published this Friday (14). ).

Marina Silva stated that there was also “very great resistance” to increasing government resources, in the ceiling-breaking PEC, for portfolios such as the Environment and Human Rights, part of which could be used to create the Climate Authority, which did not come out. of the paper. “The design is ready,” she said.

The minister is also a witness to the clash taking place in the ministry’s backyard – the Esplanada – between Ibama and Petrobras and the Ministry of Mines and Energy for oil exploration in the basin at the mouth of the Amazon River. She avoided issuing an opinion on the dispute, stating that the environmental agency only complies with the law, “we neither facilitate nor hinder”.

Marina Silva also denied that she felt criticized by Minister Alexandre Silveira, of Mines and Energy, when she said that Lula is Brazil’s environmental ambassador. And she said she was not afraid of the country suffering trade retaliation from the European Union or the United States on the pretext of environmental issues.

“Brazil has to negotiate as equals, preserving its interests. And one of our interests is the preservation of our forests and respect for traditional communities”, she added.

She also defended that the meeting of the Amazonian countries, in August, generate an agreement for a sustainable development plan for that region, with “financing, knowledge, technological base and an articulation that goes beyond the governments”.
