Marina Dias wins gold for Brazil at the Paraclimbing World Cup – News of Brazil

Marina Dias, from São Paulo, made history when she won an unprecedented gold medal for her country at the Paraclimbing World Championship, in Bern (Switzerland). In her first participation in world championships, the Brazilian won the dispute in the RP3 category (athletes with slight limitations in reach and strength), leaving behind the British Christhiane Luttkhueizen and the Dutch Martha Evans, silver and bronze respectively. This season alone, Marina Dias has already climbed to the podium three more times in stages of the World Cup. She won gold in Salt Lake City (USA) and Innsbruck (Austria), and was bronze in Villars (Switzerland).
Marina Dias was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an autoimmune degenerative disease. She used to run, but in 2009 she had the left side of her body affected by the disease. In search of other physical activities, Marina ended up falling in love with climbing.
After a three-year absence, Brazil returned to send representatives to the Paraclimbing World Championship. In addition to Marina Dias, the national delegation also includes debutants Luciano Frazão, in the AL 2 category (athletes with one of the lower limbs amputated or with severe motor impairment), and Leonardo Vilha, in AU3 (impairment in at least one of the hands, or with several fingers missing or with reduced motor function).
Although climbing has already been part of the Olympic program at the Tokyo Games (Japan) and is maintained at the Paris 2024 Games, para-climbing is not yet included in the list of Paralympic sports. In early 2023, the International Paralympic Committee confirmed 22 disciplines at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, and left open the possibility of paraclimbing and parasurfing being included, for the first time, from Los Angeles 2028, if the two sports are indicated by the Committee Organizer. The Committee’s final decision will be made by the end of this year.
