Cover of the single ‘Romeo ou Juliet’, by Maria Alcina Disclosure ♪ “Guess whoever you want / If I’m a man or a woman / I’m a mix of Romeo and Juliet / I’m the face of the future of the planet”, says Maria Alcina in the versions of the chorus of the unprecedented Romeo or Juliet march. The composer is an 85-year-old veteran reveler, João Roberto Kelly, author of anthological marchinhas such as Cabeleira do Zezé (1964), Mulata Yê Yê Yê (1964), Dança do bole bole (1977) and Maria Sapatão (1981). In Romeo or Juliet, Kelly defends gender diversity and freedom, in verses in tune with the flexibilization of male and female roles in contemporary society. Executive produced by Rodrigo Faour, author of the lyrics written by Kelly, the recording of Romeo ou Julieta arrives on the digital world in a single scheduled for Thursday, January 11th. The musical direction of the single Romeu ou Julieta is by Rovilson Pascoal, who plays bass, cavaquinho and controls the recording’s synths, expanding the partnership with Maria Alcina, with whom he has already worked on the albums De normala Bastam os others (2013) and Espírito de tudo (2017). The wind and voice arrangement is by maestro Lincoln Antonio, who is currently also part of Bloco do Água Preta, an association from Pompeia, a neighborhood in São Paulo (SP) that has been reviving the tradition of new marchinhas during street Carnival. In fact, the choir in the recording included several revelers from the block. Lincoln Antonio also signs with Rovilson Pascoal and percussionist Rogério Bastos the basic arrangement of the single Romeu ou Julieta, a vehicle for the reaffirmation of Maria Alcina’s exhilarating verve, proud in the imperative verses – “If you want me / It has to be the way you eu vier” – which conclude the gender issue returned to the carnival agenda by João Roberto Kelly.
