Carioca Marcus Vinícius D’Almeida won, this Sunday (21), the gold medal in the stage of Shanghai (China) of the Archery World Cup. In the final, the 25-year-old Brazilian defeated South Korean Oh Jin-Hyek, Olympic champion at the London Games (United Kingdom) in 2012. The Asian country is the main force in the sport.
World runner-up in 2021 in Yankton (United States), Marcus reached the top of a World Cup for the second time. Last year, the carioca won the stage in Paris (France), also overcoming, in the final, a shooter from South Korea: Kim Je Deok, who won two gold medals at the Tokyo Games (Japan).
In archery, athletes shoot three arrows per set, and can add up to 30 points in the partial, depending on where the shot hits the target. Whoever gets the best score wins the round and scores two points in the match. In case of a tie, each shooter scores one point. In this Sunday’s final, Marcus won the first two sets (30/29 and 28/27) and opened 4 to 0, but Jin-Hyek won the next two (27/28 and 26/28), equaling the match at 4 to 4. In the decisive round, the Brazilian was the most efficient: he made 28 to 26 to close the dispute at 6 to 4.
“It was a difficult match, with ups and downs. I started well, but then I couldn’t hold on. I’m happy to finally win. Winning the gold was incredible because I want to stay at the top of the world rankings.”highlighted the carioca on the World Archery website, which is the international federation of the modality, citing the position he has occupied since February of this year.
To be champion in Shanghai, Marcus had to face five opponents. Before facing Jin-Hyek, the Brazilian beat the Iranian Reza Shabani (7 to 3), the Mexican Caleb Urbina (6 to 0), the Japanese Saito Fumiya (6 to 2), the French Baptiste Addis (6 to 0) and the Chinese Li Zhongyuan (7 to 3).
The conquest in China already guaranteed Marcus in the final stage of the World Cup, on September 9th and 10th, in Hermosillo (Mexico). Last year, the Brazilian finished the dispute, which took place in Tlaxcala (Mexico), in fifth position.
