Senator Marcelo Castro (MDB-PI) said this Wednesday (14) that the ten MDB senators must vote “unanimously” in favor of nominating lawyer Cristiano Zanin to the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Zanin met with the Senate bench this afternoon. The rapporteur for the nomination, Senator Veneziano Vital do Rego (PB), is also from the MDB.
“We didn’t close the issue, but we are ten senators and all, unanimously, were in favor of nominating Zanin for Minister of the Federal Supreme Court. We are sure that the MDB will cast its ten votes here in the Senate for Zanin”, said the parliamentarian.
Castro said he believes in a “consecrative” vote for the nominee for the Supreme Court, “because he has credentials for that”. Asked if he saw a problem with the fact that Zanin was President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s (PT) lawyer in Lava Jato, the senator denied it. “I don’t think so [tem problema]I think that Zanin had an opportunity as Lula’s lawyer to show Brazilian society his competence, haughtiness and firmness of purpose, knowledge and character… More than harming, he speaks in favor”, he said.
This Tuesday (13), Lula’s nominee managed to secure the support of the PSD bench, made up of 15 senators. Zanin has been roaming the Senate in search of support. He will be questioned by the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) next Wednesday (21).
