Manifesto for women in the STF has the support of Dira Paes and Fafá – 07/19/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

A manifesto articulated by renowned jurists in defense of the appointment of a woman to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) gathered, in four days, more than 1,900 signatures in support of the thesis. Personalities from the artistic world, such as actress Dira Paes and singers Fafá de Belém and Lia Sophia, also joined.

In the document, which will be delivered to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the organizers report the “extreme discomfort” at seeing, once again, male names emerging as favorites for a vacancy in the highest court in Brazil.

“There are jurists in the country with outstanding academic production, national and international projection, working in universities and developing important work in favor of human rights and democracy. the text.

A member of the Lula government, the National Secretary for the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People, Symmy Larrat, is also among the signatories who adhered to the manifesto after its publication.

As the column showed, the initiative has drawn attention for being born in academia, which is not usually involved in the dispute for nominations to the court.

One of the organizers is the jurist and PUC-RJ professor Gisele Cittadino, acclaimed around Lula and well liked by the president himself. She, who is also part of the Prerogativas group, was one of the first to question, legally, the arrest of the petista by determination of the then judge Sergio Moro.

At the time, the professor turned her house into a kind of “HQ” for studies and legal discussions around the case.

The PUC-RJ professor claims to have no interest in leaving her academic life to take a seat on the Supreme Court —and says she has already signaled this to Lula—, but says she insists on joining the chorus that asks that a woman be chosen to replace Minister Rosa Weber in October.

“If by chance the president thinks differently and nominates a man, to put a woman [nessa vaga] it won’t be easy in the future”, says Cittadino. “So much so that until today there have only been three female ministers in the entire history of the Supreme Court. This is horrible,” he adds.

The jurist is enthusiastic when talking about three names that, in her assessment, would be excellent candidates: the prosecutor Ana Cláudia Pinho, from the Public Ministry of Pará, who is supported by the Italian jurist Luigi Ferrajoli; that of judge Simone Schreiber, from the Federal Regional Court of the 2nd Region; and that of Judge Sayonara Grillo, from the Regional Labor Court of the 1st Region.

As the column showed, Lula began to consider the possibility of appointing a woman to the Supreme Court. Publicly pressured by social movements, he began to collect information on possible candidates for office.
