The project also promoted environmental discussions, as it uses recycled materials in its production
Manaus (AM) – More than 60 students, from the 5th year of elementary school, used mathematics to produce interactive and multidisciplinary work at Escola Estadual (EE) Barão do Rio Branco, Center of Manaus. The project, entitled “Pedagogical Market: the use of packaging as a teaching resource in the Mathematics teaching-learning process”, also promoted environmental discussions, as it used recycled materials in its production.
The organization of the “Mercadinho Pedagógico” had actions similar to real businesses, with the creation of advertisements, jingles, divisions by sectors, pricing and production of inserts. According to the project’s guiding teacher, Maria de Fátima Cardoso, without realizing it, the students entered a mathematical universe.
“We work with students on mathematical operations, logical reasoning, the monetary system, decimal numbers, the concept of discounts, promotions, percentages. We instigated them, and they were super engaged at all times”,
highlighted the teacher.
The “Mercadinho Pedagógico” is a project also endorsed by the Science at School Program (PCE). Professor Maria de Fátima’s initiative is one of more than 1,100 submitted to the Amazonas State Research Support Foundation (Fapeam) by schools in the state education network in 2023.
Collective participation
It was student Ana Paula Sapucaí, aged 10, who was responsible for creating the lyrics and performing the jingle for the fictitious store organized at “Mercadinho Pedagógico”. Ana Paula said that singing is one of her greatest passions, and that, in this way, she also contributed to the success of the activity.
“I told the teacher that every grocery store has a song, and asked her to write it. I wrote it with my friend, and as I like to sing, we made a happy song for the performances”,
highlighted the student.
All items in the “Mercadinho Pedagógico” came from reused materials, and creativity could also be seen with liquid commercial products. Strategically divided into sectors, the liquids gained the correct color with the students mixing dyes, under the teacher’s supervision.
“It was a great experience. The teacher said that if we mixed red, yellow and blue, it would come out black. I was very happy, we wanted to make a Coca-Cola”,
shared student João Cícero Benacon, 9 years old.
Over the next few weeks, the “Mercadinho Pedagógico” will also be part of the routine of other classes at EE Barão do Rio Branco. The teaching unit operates in morning and afternoon shifts, serving more than 400 students from all grades of Elementary School 1 (1st to 5th year).
