The French president, Emmanuel Macron, launched the 200-day countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games this Monday (8), urging the French public to get more involved in sports as the country prepares to host the Games for the first time in 100 years.
“It’s 200 days and it starts now. That’s why we have a great national cause this year: sport,” said Macron, posing next to a punching bag, with gloves on his shoulder and a bit of sweat on his forehead, in a video posted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “Sport at school. As you know, we have made 30 minutes of sport mandatory for all primary school students, we have added more sport in secondary school and I invite you all to play at least 30 minutes of sport every day, hopefully more, if you can.”
Macron also highlighted other goals that France has set for the Games. “France will host the most carbon-free Olympic and Paralympic Games in history, green Games that comply with agreements [climáticos] from Paris”he said.
The Olympics will be held from July 26th to August 11th, and the Paralympics will be held from August 28th to September 8th. The medals will be revealed next month, and the athletes’ village will be handed over on March 1st.
