Macapá Summer: for the first time, extreme BMX cyclists compete in the sports championship – News of Brazil

Sunday is also the day for extreme sports at the Glicério Marques Complex, located in the center of the capital. Known as the youngest of cycling BMX STREET is part of the sports modalities of Macapá Summer 2023, an event idealized by the Municipality of Macapá. BMX is a racing sport with bicycles on tracks.
In this Sunday’s competition (2), about 20 cyclists participated in the categories: beginner, amateur and professional. Cash prizes, medals and trophies were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category.
The modality is practiced with special bicycles with a 20-inch rim, with ramps and wall curves, providing spectacular jumps. “This is the first time that we have been included in the Macapá Verão program. Approximately, more than 100 athletes practice the modality in Macapá, remembering that BMX is not necessarily based on age, but on technical level”, explains BMX coordinator, Dani Boy.
Child athlete, Luan Henrique, 7 years old, competed in the beginner category. The little one didn’t win, but he says that this is just his beginning in the sport. “Cycling is good, I like to ride a bike and I want to be a champion one day. I will train until I win a championship, ”he said.
In the professional category, Joabi Sousa, known as ‘dentinho’, stood out with radical maneuvers. “I’ve been practicing BMX for 11 years. Last year I won in the professional in Belém do Pará, now another victory to count ”, he celebrated.
For the head of the Municipal Secretariat for Sports and Leisure (Semel), Bruno Igreja, the event reinforces the commitment of the municipal management with following sportsmen. “Our objective is to give space to modalities that have little visibility and encourage these athletes to continue in the sport, as well as discover new talents”.
