Lula will hear demands on the minimum wage on May 1st – 04/23/2023 – Panel

The union centrals are going to use their May 1st act in Vale do Anhangabaú, in the center of São Paulo, to charge the federal government with a project to increase the value of the minimum wage for the coming years. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) confirmed his presence at the event.

“We know what the president’s commitment is. But we know that he has an arm wrestling with the economic part of the government. What leaked from the proposal until now is just retrogression”, says Miguel Torres, president of Força Sindical.

In February, Lula announced that the minimum wage will be R$1,320 starting in May, a measure that was criticized by the centrals, who said they were not heard and that the value should be R$1,382.71.

Last week, the PT government sent Congress a forecast for a minimum wage of R$1,389 in 2024, that is, no real increase in relation to R$1,320.

The trade union centrals took to the government a proposal according to which in the next three years the minimum wage would be readjusted by another 2.4% per year, in addition to the inflation of the period measured by the INPC (National Consumer Price Index) and the GDP variation (Inner Product Bruno).

This additional index of 2.4% would be used to recover losses caused by the non-application of the readjustment rule between 2020 and 2022, in the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government.

Until 2019, the minimum wage was corrected by adding the INPC to the GDP variation in the two previous years.

The centrals’ proposal also provides for the adoption, as of 2027, of a floor for a real increase in the minimum wage of 2.4% per year. This level would last until 2053, being revised every decade.

“It is a State policy project, not a government one, to be incorporated over the course of 30 years”, says Miguel Torres.
