Lula wants to regain a slice of agribusiness. In recent days, the president has amended public nods to a sector steeped in opposition to the PT. At the Bahia Farm Show, he called big producers “companions”, promised government help and said that there was no reason to rival family farming.
The distance between the two sides is not small. Agribusiness has given itself body and soul to Jair Bolsonaro. Ruralist politicians gave heavy support to the ex-president’s re-election, and businessmen even bankrolled coup acts. The sour climate led Lula to refer to some members of the sector as “fascists” – something he repeated already as president.
Ruralists continue to be mostly Bolsonarists, but the president decided to try something different. Lula used the premiere of his weekly live, on Tuesday (13), to send messages. He said he never had problems with agribusiness and warned that this year’s Safra Plan will be proof that his management has “no objection to them”.
The government cannon is Lula’s main weapon. In Bahia, the PT promoted a phone call he made to the Chinese Xi Jinping to release containers of meat. “I don’t want to know if the guy who has the container voted for Lula,” he said.
In the coming weeks, the idea is to convince the economic team to release a turbocharged Crop Plan. The Ministry of Agriculture wants interest reduced by up to three percentage points per year for producers who follow sustainable criteria.
In addition to keeping an eye on business, Lula made a political gesture to big producers. At a time when the government became a target in the MST’s CPI, the president said that agrarian reform must be carried out without land invasion. “There’s no need for noise, there’s no need for war.”
Lula’s tactic is to discuss the relationship with agriculture openly. “They know that, from an economic point of view, they have no problem with us,” she said. “The problem could be ideological. If it’s ideological, be patient, we’ll be in opposing camps.”
