President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) suggested to the vice-president and minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), this Wednesday (12) the possibility of the government lowering the cost of home appliances from the “line white”. In 2009, Lula launched a program that reduced the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI) on products such as refrigerators and washing machines.
“I said to Alckmin: ‘How about we make a ‘little opening’ for the white line again?’ Facilitate the purchase of a refrigerator, television, washing machine. People, from time to time, need to change their household items. When the old refrigerator is not working, it is not freezing well, you have to change it. And, if it’s expensive, let’s make it cheaper, let’s try to find a way”, said Lula.
The declaration took place during the resumption ceremony of the National Science and Technology Council. The president also asked the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet, and the president of the BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, to “open their hands” to make the initiative viable. After the event, Tebet stated that the issue is not under discussion in the government. She pointed out that the president’s proposal should be handled by Alckmin.
