Lula says war in the Middle East is genocide

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated, this Wednesday (25), that what is happening in the Middle East is a genocide. “It’s not a war, it’s a genocide that has killed almost 2 thousand children who have nothing to do with this war, they are victims of this war. And honestly, I don’t know how a human being is capable of waging war knowing that the result of that war is the death of innocent children,” he said.

Lula participated, at Palácio do Planalto, in the installation of the Federation Council and spoke quickly because he had a scheduled conversation with the Emir of Qatar, Tamin bin al Thani, to discuss the conflict in the Middle East.

“I have a phone call with the emir of Qatar to try to find someone capable of talking to someone to see if they can release, first, the Brazilians who are stranded in the Gaza Strip, a few kilometers from the border with Egypt, who are wanting to return to Brazil”,

revealed.

Around 30 Brazilians in the Gaza Strip are awaiting rescue, but there is an impasse between authorities over opening the border with Egypt.

Lula has already spoken with leaders from several countries, including Israel, the Palestinian Authority, Egypt, Iran, Turkey, France, Russia and the United Arab Emirates, with the aim of mediating a solution to the conflict.

“What is happening right now in the Middle East is very serious, it is not about arguing who is right, who is wrong, who fired the first shot, who fired the second”, added the president. Brazil defends the release of hostages and the creation of a humanitarian corridor to allow aid to be sent to Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip.

On October 7, Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, launched a surprise missile attack against Israel and an incursion by armed fighters on the ground, killing civilians and soldiers and taking hundreds of Israeli and foreign hostages. In response, Israel bombed several Hamas infrastructures in Gaza and imposed a total siege on the territory, cutting off water, fuel and electricity supplies.

The attacks have already left thousands of people dead, injured and homeless in both territories. It is estimated that around 1.4 million people have been displaced from their homes in Gaza.
