Government launches the National Literate Child Commitment
Brasilia DF) – President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said this Monday (12) that the Brazilian state “has failed miserably” over the last few years when it comes to literacy. During the launch of the National Literate Child Commitment, Lula recalled that, in 2021, more than half of children finished the 2nd year of elementary school without being able to read and write. “More than 1 million children were left to their own devices in the literacy process”.
“The delay in literacy is because the Brazilian State has failed miserably in recent years. It failed because it thought that transferring resources to elementary schools was an expense and would compromise the fiscal balance. It failed because it did not guarantee quality school meals. It failed because, when the pandemic led to the closure of classrooms, the previous ruler did not demand emergency solutions for education, preferring denialism and hate speech. The result could not have been better”
said the president.
“Even having a public education network throughout the national territory, improved over decades of experience and cooperation between the Union, states and municipalities, Brazil has suffered shameful setbacks”
he added.
“It’s something so simple, so easy, so visible to all of us that it should happen every year, but unfortunately, in Brazil, we live in a very dark period in which the federal entities did not talk to each other”
concluded Lula.
