President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said, this Thursday (6), that he will not revoke, but improve the new secondary education, implemented in the management of his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
“This high school educational program, as it was trying to improve. We are not going to revoke it. We have suspended it and we are going to discuss with all entities interested in discussing how to improve high school education in that country,” he said.
“And we are going to suspend it for a period until we reach an agreement that leaves everyone satisfied with secondary education in this country. It was not revoked. It was suspended so that we can re-discuss with Brazilian society linked to education what the agent wants to the new high school”, he added.
The representative’s statement was made during breakfast with journalists this Thursday morning at the Planalto Palace.
Pressured by growing criticism from educators and students, the Lula government suspended the implementation of the new secondary education in an ordinance published in this week’s Official Gazette. The change also bars planned changes to adapt the Enem.
Lula’s speech reverberates with that of the Minister of Education, Camilo Santana. He said that there will be adjustments to the model, but that there are no plans to revoke the measure, as demanded by student organizations.
The suspension was decided, in large part, as a way to alleviate the wear and tear that the government has been feeling with the movement that calls for the repeal of the reform, in force since last year.
The government’s decision will affect up to 2.9 million students, as shown by Sheet.
The new high school was approved in 2017, in the Michel Temer (MDB) government, by provisional measure, and the implementation schedule was defined during the Bolsonaro government.
In general terms, the policy reformulated the curriculum for the final years of basic education, so as to provide that 40% of the load is allocated to elective subjects organized within large areas of knowledge, the so-called training itineraries. Thus, the traditional subjects, common to students, are limited to 60% of the curriculum.
Implementation for students began in 2022, in the 1st year of the stage, when all state networks in the country needed to adapt. Most private schools did the same.
