Lula says he does not support CPI to investigate coup acts in Brasilia

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said this Wednesday (18) that he does not support the Senate’s idea of creating a parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPI) to investigate responsibilities for the coup acts in Brasília on January 8. “A commission of inquiry might not help, and it might create tremendous confusion. We don’t need that now,” Lula said in an interview with GloboNews.
The president justified that the country has the necessary instruments to investigate what happened in the federal capital and questioned what would be the gains for investigations with the CPI. “We have 1,300 people arrested, we are listening to testimonies, taking cell phones, we have images from cameras that we know who participated, we know who was negligent, who was not negligent. What are we going to gain from a CPI?”, he also told the PT.
Lula, however, pointed out that opening the commission is a decision of the National Congress. “But, if by chance they asked me for advice, I would say don’t do CPI because it won’t help”, she emphasized.
The lack of consensus on the CPI also affects the PT, the party of the President of the Republic, which is divided on the need for a commission. The Senate has already reached the number of signatures necessary to establish the collegiate. According to the President of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), the installation should take place after the return of the legislative recess, starting in February.
