President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) sanctioned the law that creates the program to combat sexual harassment in public bodies and schools, and that obliges the Specialized Police Stations for Assisting Women (Deams) to operate uninterruptedly throughout the country. country. The norms were published in the Official Gazette (DOU) this Tuesday (4/4).

With the new law, effective as of today, the women’s police stations will have to offer victims private rooms, with assistance preferably provided by female police officers. And in the case of cities where there is no specialized police station for women, the service should be done at a common police station, preferably by a specialized agent.

The law stipulates that police officers undergo training to care for victims “in an effective and humanitarian manner”. The specialized police stations will also have to provide a telephone number or an electronic form of contact for immediate action by the police in cases of violence against women.

The program to combat sexual harassment, on the other hand, will have the objective of preventing and confronting the practice of sexual harassment, against sexual dignity and all forms of sexual violence within schools, in addition to public bodies and entities. These institutions will be responsible for training professionals, producing educational campaigns and creating actions and strategies aimed at preventing and confronting this type of crime. Training materials will be made available by the Executive Branch.
