There was already expectation that the trip would take place on the next 11th, as shown by Folha de S.Paulo. on a date like Senate President Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG)this week, Lula invited him back to the entourage with this new date.
They were gathered for more than two and a half hours on Tuesday night (28), when they also dealt with economic issues and the crisis of the rite of analysis of MPs (provisional measures).
The Brazilian government was waiting for the approval of the Chinese for the new date, which has now occurred. All agendas with authorities are maintained.
As Folha de S.Paulo showed, the bilateral meeting with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, was the most anticipated agenda for Lula’s allies. Now, the expectation is that the meeting will take place between the 13th and 14th of April.
At the meeting, the PT’s main ambition on the international stage will be at stake: to present itself as a facilitator of a dialogue for peace in the Ukrainian War, which has lasted more than a year and has a direct impact on the global economy.
The Brazilian government has already received positive signals from the Chinese that Xi Jinping is willing to deal with the situation in Ukraine with Lula.
Lula will have two other central political meetings: with the Chinese premier, Li Qiang, and with the president of the National People’s Congress, Zhao Leji.
At the end of April, Lula also has another international agenda: Portugal and Spain. In the following month, he should also participate in the G7 meeting in Japan.
The Chinese position is considered fundamental by Lula. The petista has already discussed the matter with western leaders, such as the rulers of Germany, Olaf Scholz; from the US, Joe Biden; and from France, Emmanuel Macron.
The receptivity of these leaders has been cold. For example, the differences between Lula and Scholz on the subject were visible during the German’s visit to Brasília, right at the beginning of the PT’s mandate.
Macron, in turn, responded to a publication by Lula on Twitter inviting the Brazilian to discuss the international crisis based on the ten-point proposal by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskiy -a list of demands considered unacceptable by Moscow, as it involves not only devolution of territory such as the establishment of a special court to try Russia’s war crimes.
Given this scenario, support from China for Lula’s position as a possible interlocutor in the process is considered fundamental for Brazilian diplomacy. Beijing is seen today as one of the only players in the global arena with concrete conditions to influence Vladimir Putin.
