Lula presses for a solution for app workers – 8/3/2023 – Panel

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) has demanded from the Ministry of Labor and trade unionists that they speed up the regulation of workers through apps, given what he considers slowness in discussions in the group created to debate the issue.

He has already told allies that he would like to announce measures in the area, including legislative ones, before traveling to the US on September 18th. The reason for this is that the issue is on the agenda for discussions at a bilateral meeting between the PT and US President Joe Biden on September 19.

At the last meeting of the WG for apps created at the ministry, held on July 19, negotiations focused on guaranteeing minimum wages for workers and adequate conditions. But consensus is still far away.

The expectation is that the companies present a document at the next meeting, on August 14th. Lula went so far as to tell allies that if there is no finalized proposal before his trip, he himself may unilaterally announce measures on September 17, the eve of the trip.

The discussion currently revolves around the inclusion of workers in Social Security and also the definition of the activity of app companies.
