Lula participates in dinner with STF ministers at Barroso’s house

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) participates this Tuesday night (19) in a dinner with ministers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). The event is held at the home of the President of the Court, Luís Roberto Barroso, in Lago Sul, an upscale neighborhood of Brasília. Before dinner, Barroso spoke briefly with the press and said that the meeting was an “institutional conversation” requested by Lula.

The meeting celebrates the harmony between the head of the Executive and the top of the Judiciary and should serve to discuss topics of interest to the government that are being processed in the Court. The STF ministers must analyze the attempt to reverse the Congress decision that overturned the veto on the time frame for the demarcation of indigenous lands, the change in the State Law to allow the appointment of politicians to management positions and the readjustment of the FGTS.

Furthermore, the dinner also takes place amid the approval by the Senate of the proposed amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that limits individual decisions by Supreme Court ministers. One of the favorable votes was from the government leader in the Senate, Jaques Wagner (PT-BA), a fact that angered Court ministers. Earlier, Barroso defended the competence of the Court’s ministers to make individual decisions, reported the Brazil Agency.

All STF ministers were invited: Gilmar Mendes, Dias Toffoli, Luiz Fux, Edson Fachin, Alexandre de Moraes, Nunes Marques, and Cristiano Zanin, but André Mendonça and Cármen Lúcia already had commitments scheduled and will not participate in the event.

The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino, was also invited. Appointed by Lula, Dino was approved by the Senate to be the new minister of the Court. The inauguration was scheduled for February 22nd. The Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, the first lady, Rosângela da Silva, Janja, and the ministers’ wives also participate in the event.
