Lula: Impeachment and Bolsonaro were setbacks for women – 08/03/2023 – Politics

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Wednesday (8) that the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff (PT) and the election of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) represented a setback to the women’s agenda.

The representative also said that it is necessary to fight to maintain the conquests, because it is easy to destroy something that took years to build. The statement was given in his speech, during the Women’s Day ceremony, at the Planalto Palace, in which the government announced a package of measures aimed at this segment of the population.

The event was attended by civil society leaders, parliamentarians, and former president Dilma, who was the “star” of the event. The former representative was received by those present with shouts of “hello, hello, hello, hello, Dilma”, mentioned and applauded in speeches.

Lula recognized that, despite breaking the record for ministers in the first echelon, with 11 nominees, it is still far from parity and women want more.

“After everything that happened here today, certainly many of you are still saying ‘but there’s a lot missing’. The fact of saying that we have 11 women in government doesn’t make you thank the government, it makes you say that there’s a lack of more women participating. a process, which we advance as society advances and conquers space”, he said.

“A process that began in 2003, when she won elections, continued when Dilma won in 2010. But it is a process that you can see suffered a huge setback after the 2016 coup with Dilma and suffered an even greater blow after the thing was elected president of the Republic of that country. Therefore, it is important for you to be prepared, we have to fight not only to conquer, but to maintain. You realized that it is very easy to destroy something that took years to build”, he added .

Dilma had her mandate revoked in 2016 in an impeachment process that was carried out in the House and Senate. Both Houses considered that the then president committed a crime of responsibility for the so-called “fiscal disputes”, with the opening of budget credit without the approval of Congress. The decision, in the process and on the merits, was accompanied without contestation by the STF (Federal Supreme Court).

The women’s agenda, especially femicide, became one of the main issues of the Lula government 3. The president, in his speech, said that absolutely nothing justifies gender inequality, “perhaps men’s fear of being overcome by women “.

In his speech, Lula said that it will be up to the Judiciary to inspect whether the law that determines the equal salary payment for men and women who perform the same function will be complied with.

“When we made the law, we made a point of putting the word mandatory to comply with the law, so that definitely in the public service, in offices, in banks, in stores, in factories, no one earns less just for being a woman”, he said.

The Chief Executive cited several women who have marked the history of Brazil in his speech, such as painter Tarsila do Amaral and soccer player Marta. He also mentioned former President Dilma’s struggle against the military dictatorship.
