The Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government intends to use meetings with representatives from China to discuss a protocol signed in 2015 that establishes an immediate self-embargo on sales when a new occurrence of mad cow disease, Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) , is identified in Brazil.
Representatives of the Brazilian government have a virtual meeting scheduled for Tuesday (28) with the Chinese to address the issue. The following week, the meeting should take place in person in the Asian country.
The Brazilian government intends to suggest a relationship in which the notification of a case of mad cow does not totally and indefinitely interrupt the export of meat to China. The assessment of whether or not the embargo is necessary would be based on an analysis of the risk of contamination.
The current stoppage of the market is related to a case in which, according to the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Favaro, everything indicates that the disease is atypical —that is, developed during the degenerative process of the animal, more common in older cattle, and not there is a risk of contamination for the herd or for humans.
Final confirmation will be made by the International Organization for Animal Health (OIE) laboratory in Canada.
In the new format that the Lula government intends to suggest, the interruption could only occur while the final result is awaited. After that, with confirmation that there is no risk of contamination, exports would resume.
The current protocol was signed in 2015 after more than two years of Chinese embargo on Brazilian meat related to cases of mad cow.
In 2021, China maintained the embargo for almost four months, which was seen as retaliation against Brazil due to the attacks made on the Asian country by Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and his allies.
