The Minister of the Civil House, Rui Costa, said this Thursday (15) that the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government will launch a program to make internet available in 100% of public schools in the country.
“[Vamos anunciar] Actions in the area of education, to bring broadband to 100% of schools in the country, including rural schools. All schools will [internet] until the end of the president’s term”, said Rui to the press after a ministerial meeting.
The project involves the Ministries of Education and Communications, in addition to the BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development), and should use resources from Fust (Fund for Universalization of Telecommunications Services) to pay for broadband.
The minister did not go into detail about how the new program will be, which will be launched in July — the month in which the government still intends to announce the new PAC (Growth Acceleration Program).
“Everything that we had programmed to launch fundamental and important programs, including Minha Casa, Minha Vida and Bolsa Família, in the area of education and infrastructure, were launched, that is, we met our goal and collectively announced what each one of us will do”, added Rui Costa.
According to Gape (Group for Monitoring the Cost of School Connectivity Projects), from Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), 94% of public elementary schools had internet access in 2022.
The number is higher among schools in urban areas. Of the 82,233, 98.8% have internet access. In rural areas, access is restricted to 86% of the 52,122 schools.
The states with the lowest number of schools with internet access are Acre (45.4%), Amazonas (36.8%) and Roraima (32%).
The states of Paraná and Mato Grosso do Sul grant Internet access to 99.9% of primary schools, followed by Goiás (99.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (99.6%).
