The government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) canceled, from the beginning of the government until the end of September, the registration of around 2.9 million people from Bolsa Família.
The survey, with data from the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Combating Hunger (MDS), was published by Paulo Cappelli’s column, in Metropolises. According to the column, 2,870,743 families were canceled between January and September 2023.”
The cut in aid, according to the government, is a kind of “fine-toothed comb” in the program to adapt benefit payments to those who actually fit the predetermined criteria. And most of the canceled registrations are data included in the second half of last year, when 3.7 million started to receive Bolsa Família.
During the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro, the program was called Auxílio Brasil, and by the end of last year it had 21.6 million beneficiaries. In the current government, the number of beneficiaries is currently around 21.4 million, that is, 200 thousand less. Even so, this Wednesday (4) the Lula government’s Social Communication Secretariat published a campaign stating that “Bolsa Família is growing”.
