Lula government considers resuming Consea with members overthrown by Bolsonaro – 01/21/2023 – Panel

The Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) government is considering resuming the activities of Consea (National Council for Food and Nutritional Security) with the team whose mandate was interrupted after former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) deactivated the body as one of the first management measures. The directors lost their function about six months before the scheduled deadline.
The proposal was presented at a meeting on Thursday (19) that brought together the president of Consea at the time, Elisabetta Recine, and three other former leaders, Renato Maluf, Francisco Menezes and Maria Emília Pacheco.
Guests and government representatives approved the idea during the conversation in Brasilia. The organ, reactivated by Lula in 2003 as part of the Fome Zero program, should return to work by March and will be allocated to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic.
With the restitution of the mandate of the councilors for the 2017-2019 biennium, the government will mark a difference with Bolsonaro in the treatment of the council that advises the Presidency on policies against food insecurity, one of the problems that Lula intends to tackle.
The Consea group will be tasked with organizing the next national conference for the sector, another social participation mechanism that the PT wants to rescue after the drastic decrease in civil society involvement in government decisions. The return of the council was one of Lula’s first actions after taking office, on the 1st, through a provisional measure.
