President Lula (PT) said this Thursday (6) that he received information that Joe Biden will run for reelection as head of the United States as a “stimulus”. The president, however, said that it would be “irresponsible” to discuss the 2026 elections at this time.
Throughout the electoral campaign, Lula indicated his decision that, if elected, he would not run for re-election in 2026. He argued in the campaign that he will be 81 years old in the next presidential race (he is currently 77) and that his intention is to form a transitional government , which makes room for “having new people running for elections”. He stated even before the elections that he will work to create new leaders to compete.
But, right at the beginning of management, there was a change.
“These days I went to Hiroshima, I met President Biden and I asked if it was true that he was going to run. He said ‘I will’. I said, this is an incentive, I’m younger than him”, he said.
The statement was given in an interview with SBT. The entirety will only air at night, but some excerpts from the recording have already been released.
He said that he does not let ministers anticipate the next electoral dispute for the Planalto Palace, but that the “concrete data” is that he works “a lot so that the government has a candidate”.
“It is important that we have a lot of patience, a lot of care. I will not allow my minister to do politics ahead of time. To do politics after March or April 2026 arrives, when he has the party convention, when he wants to be a candidate, who wants to leave the government, he can be a candidate”, he said.
