President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will take temporary command of Mercosur next Tuesday (4th), when the bloc’s 62nd summit will be held in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina. The temporary presidency of the group – formed by Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay – will last for six months and the great expectation is for the conclusion of the Mercosur-European Union agreement.
During a press conference this Thursday (29), the Secretary for Economic and Financial Affairs at the Itamaraty, Ambassador Maurício Carvalho Lyrio, explained that the Brazilian government is finishing the evaluation of points of the Mercosur-European Union agreement to present to the bloc’s partners and then take it to the European economic group, informed Agência Brasil.
The critical position of the Brazilian government regarding the recent demands of the European Union for the agreement with Mercosur was also highlighted by the diplomat. “It is a process that requires great care on our part. And, therefore, the Brazilian government dedicated itself during this period to carrying out this evaluation. I think that we are very close to presenting our evaluations to the Mercosur partners and, later, presenting them to the partners of the European Union,” he said.
