President Lula’s meeting with his American counterpart, Joe Biden, last week was much more than an opportunity to re-establish the dialogue between the two nations, which Bolsonaro had maintained. The forest and biodiversity reserves, the existence of original populations with a rich cultural heritage and the most recent experience in building instruments to guarantee the socio-environmental heritage of the country make Brazil a first-rate interlocutor in the arenas where the fate of the planet is discussed. .

In the past, the leading role in the formation of international climate change and biodiversity regimes and, in the present, the decisive way in which Brasília tries to face the humanitarian and environmental crisis in the Yanomami land, provoked by the Bolsonaro government, support the country’s international ambition in the matter. .

Finally, the resilience of the Powers of the Republic to the harassment of the extreme right, the commitment to legality on the part of the leaders responsible for the broad victorious coalition in the recent elections and Lula’s impeccable democratic curriculum fully support his proposal for the international defense of the regime of freedoms.

Moreover, for what it is, the country has the responsibility to encourage in South America the establishment of mechanisms that protect the democratic system from persistent regional political instability and facilitate the transition where authoritarianism is established.
