Cases of racism involving the attacker Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, in the Spanish Championship, have bothered other great players in world football. Belgian Romelu Lukaku revealed that a union could be formed among athletes to fight against prejudice in sport.
“I think the idea of the union is going to start (getting off the ground). The idea is that the main players meet and talk directly with UEFA and FIFA,” Lukaku told CNN Español, before showing indignation over the issue.
“It’s really disappointing that this is happening because it’s 2023, the world has different cultures, different religions, people of different colors and we still make the same mistakes all the time,” said the Belgian, who will defend Inter Milan in the final of the Champions League against Manchester United this Saturday in Istanbul.
Cases of racism are not exclusive to the Spanish Championship. In April, Lukaku himself was racially abused. The case occurred in a match between Juventus and Inter Milan, in the Italian Championship, after he scored a goal and celebrated with his characteristic celebration.
In addition to Lukaku, many other players supported Vinicius Junior, including Valencia players, the team of fans involved in the last case of racism with the Real Madrid striker.
