The mayor, Arthur Lira, said this Wednesday (10) that the queue of potential center-right candidates to contest the 2026 presidential election is long.
At an event with businessmen in New York, Lira mentioned governors Cláudio Castro (RJ), Tarcísio de Freitas (SP), Romeu Zema (MG) and Ratinho Jr. (PR) as potential names.
According to Lira, former president Jair Bolsonaro made a contribution by allowing people with conservative and right-wing thinking to “come out of the closet”, overcoming a remnant of shame in expressing their feelings because of the military dictatorship.
“Today’s assessment of President Bolsonaro’s ineligibility is a risky decision, because we are 3 years and 9 months away from an election. There is time for Cláudio Castro to get strong, for Governor Zema to get strong, for Governor Tarcísio to get stronger. In my view, less chance of making mistakes than President Bolsonaro did during his campaign,” he said on stage at the Financial Times’ Brazil Summit event.
“So, a right-wing candidate, making fewer mistakes, with a strengthening of a base that exists in Brazil, and President Bolsonaro as a voter, I think the picture is quite discouraging for anyone who wants to run in an election in 2026”, said Lira.
