The mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), said this Thursday (13) that the project that criminalizes fake news should be voted on in the plenary of the house from April 26. Lira said that he had already met with the rapporteur, Deputy Orlando Silva (PCdoB-SP), to address the issue. According to the mayor, the rapporteur will be available to party leaders to debate and approve the final text.

“The intention of the presidency is to bring it to the agenda between the 26th and 27th. From now on, Deputy Orlando is at the disposal – as I put it for all leaders – of the leaders, of the deputies”, said Lira in an interview with GloboNews.

In 2020, the Senate approved the fake news PL, which sets standards for social media with the promise of combating abuse, manipulation, fake profiles and the spread of fake news on the web.

“In the last year we caught a moment of intense polarization. That politicization between freedom of expression and regulation. But everyone knows that if we don’t legislate, if we don’t curb excesses, if we don’t impose the minimum legislative limits that may be, we will always be in the hands of either abuse or injustice”, said Lira.
