The Liberal Party celebrates this Sunday (25) 38 years of foundation. Created in 1985 by Valdemar Costa Neto, the legend is the result of the union between the former Liberal Party and the National Order Rebuilding Party (Prona). Initially, the party changed its name to PR (Party of the Republic), in 2006. The acronym was renamed PL in 2019, after a party convention.
Also this Sunday, the party held a large affiliation event in São Paulo.
With 99 federal deputies, the PL has the largest group in the Chamber. In the Senate, it is the second largest group, with 12 senators. According to TSE data, it is the eighth legend in number of affiliates, with 770,288
With the approach of the next election, the party that houses former president Jair Bolsonaro expects to elect up to 1,500 mayors. The goal is to boost the party’s presence in states and municipalities with a view to the 2026 general elections.
If Bolsonaro is considered ineligible by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), the party is already studying alternatives, such as turning the former representative into an electoral force for the next disputes. The trial began on Thursday (22) and will resume on Tuesday (27).
The caption is also studying launching another candidate in Bolsonaro’s place. Among the names considered are the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas (Republicanos – SP); the governor of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo-MG); and the governor of Paraná, Ratinho Júnior (PSD-PR).
Despite the names circulating behind the scenes, Valdemar and Bolsonaro have not yet confirmed any of the names.
