Lewandowski hears appeals for Serrano’s support at the STF – 02/13/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

STF (Federal Supreme Court) Minister Ricardo Lewandowski heard appeals to support the name of lawyer and law professor Pedro Serrano for a vacancy on the court during his passage through the Florestan Fernandes National School, of the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) , in Guararema (SP).

On the occasion, the magistrate gave a speech in defense of democracy, which was honored by lawyers and activists, and planted a yellow ipe alongside members of the social movement.

Lewandowski’s visit to space had been planned since last year and should take place after he leaves the Supreme Court. The minister himself, however, would have expressed the desire to anticipate the agenda.

“The invitation was intended to pay tribute to Minister Lewandowski, highlighting the courage he had, in the Supreme Court, to face major national agendas and to make this very clear in the Lava Jato trial”, says lawyer Ney Strozake, from the Associação Brazilian Association of Jurists for Democracy (ABJD), which organized the event.

“It was the first time that a minister from the highest court visited this school. He said he didn’t want to be called ‘Excellence’ in that space, because excellence, in his words, is the Brazilian people”, he says.

Appointed during the first term of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), in 2006, Lewandowski turns 75, compulsory retirement age, on May 11, but he did not rule out the possibility of leaving office before then.

In an interview with Sheethe said that if he is consulted by Lula about the profile of his replacement, he will say that the future minister must have character, courage and firmness.

On Saturday, during the magistrate’s visit to the MST school, members of the Prerogativas group and entities such as the ABJD and the Association of Judges for Democracy (AJD) took the opportunity to express their support for Serrano.

In addition to a tribute to the Supreme Minister, the event was already being thought of as an opportunity for Pedro Serrano to be introduced to Lewandowski. Strozake, however, denies that the visit was planned only as a form of support for the lawyer.

“Pedro was there as a jurist committed to popular causes. [nomes como o jurista] Lenio Strek, judge Simone Schreiber and defender Mônica de Melo, who made their names available”, says the ABJD member.
