Legal event in Lisbon brings together a third of the STF and STJ – 06/21/2023 – Panel

The 11th Lisbon Legal Forum, which takes place between the 26th and 29th of June, will bring together almost a third of the STJ (Superior Court of Justice) and the STF (Federal Supreme Court).

It will be one of the events on the international circuit that candidates for superior courts must go through in search of support.

Currently, the STJ has three vacancies open: two for state magistrates and one for the fifth constitutional, for lawyers.

For the first, there are 59 candidate judges; for the second, the OAB (Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil) selected six for the STJ to funnel in a triple list.

The event in Lisbon is organized by STF Minister Gilmar Mendes, with the support of the National Justice Inspector, Luís Felipe Salomão. The presence of 10 of the 30 acting STJ ministers and three of the 10 of the STF is confirmed — lawyer Cristiano Zanin should only take office in the second half of the year to complete the training of 11.

Nine ministers from the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) are also taking part, including Flávio Dino (Justice) and vice-president Geraldo Alckmin, who may have influence on the final choice.

These international events are seen by candidates as a good opportunity for more informal contact with the authorities who will participate in the selection process.

In addition, with a shorter campaign period and with so many candidates, they serve as a way to circumvent the search for offices.

Also part of the circuit is the event held by Academia Paulista de Magistrados, led by judge Heraldo de Oliveira, in Paris, between June 28th and 30th, and by Ipeja (Institute for Research and Advanced Legal Studies) in Coimbra, at the beginning July.

The president of the court, Maria Thereza, scheduled for August 23 the vote on the quadruple list for seats reserved for state judges, and on the triple list to occupy the constitutional fifth dedicated to advocacy. The names will later be forwarded to Lula’s choice.
