Leader of the PL defends position for the left if Marinho wins – 01/30/2023 – Panel

The leader of the PL in the Senate, Carlos Portinho (RJ), promises that left-wing parties, such as the PT, will have spaces in the Board of Directors and in prominent commissions if Rogério Marinho (PL-RN) wins the race for the presidency of the House.

“We want all parties to have representation in the Bureau, including the left, because that’s what we want: to recover harmony and respect from the Federal Senate. If we want that, and the balance of powers, we have to start internally. This is not demagoguery, it is a fact”, he maintains.

In this way, the PSD of Rodrigo Pacheco (MG), Marinho’s opponent, would also be contemplated, guarantees Portinho.

Traditionally, the spaces are defined by agreement respecting the size of the benches – the largest ones have preference.

In the election of Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), however, after a fierce dispute with Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), the rule was broken due to the cracks left by the clash. Even when choosing Rodrigo Pacheco in 2021, already more consensual, there were disagreements and for some positions it was necessary to take the decision to the vote.

Now, Pacheco, still considered the favorite, has said that he will not leave the PL completely without space, but the legend will have to compete in the vote for the lesser positions. Mineiro’s allies point to Marinho’s aggressive campaign as one of the main factors, with the support of a digital army on social networks.

Still pointed out as an underdog, the senator from Rio Grande do Norte has defended proportionality. His interlocutors claim that it is also a question of survival: if he is elected, he will need to win the support of parties from the base of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in order to have the capacity for internal articulation.

Portinho also defends that the Senate discusses a way to ensure in the internal regulations that proportionality is respected every year. “We are going to discuss with the senators what is the best way so that this is guaranteed in the regiment and that we can, in future elections, preserve harmony and avoid these disputes. Leave them within the parties for the nomination of names, but thus preserving , the Senate.”

As the Panel showed, Rodrigo Pacheco’s negotiations for his re-election already involve the distribution of positions and the presidencies of the commissions. Davi Alcolumbre, for example, should command the CCJ (Commission for Constitution and Justice) again. The one for Economic Affairs should stay with the PSD, and the one for Foreign Relations with the MDB, probably Renan Calheiros.
