Audio messages and video excerpts from testimonials that are part of the Operation Penalty Maximum investigation, which investigates match-fixing in Brazilian football, released by TV Globo this Sunday (14) show that the betting gang made a profit of R$ 700 thousand in one round, without specifying which championship.
“We have elements here that, in just one round, the profit that the bettors had was R$ 700,000”, Fernando Cesconetto, from the Goiás Public Ministry (MP-GO), told the broadcaster.
The promoter described that the scheme was led by Bruno Lopes, who presented himself as a player manager. The suspects are divided into two groups: the group of bettors, who enticed athletes to forge bids during matches and who still place bets online, and the group of financiers, who provided money to pay the enticed players.
The TV showed an excerpt from Bruno’s statement in which he reports that he spent around R$400,000 on betting and recruiting players.
Bruno Lopes was even arrested and recognized manipulation of results. In a note, Bruno’s defense stated that “the accusations will be formally and procedurally answered in due time.”
Also according to the broadcaster, when a player did not comply with what he had agreed with the gang, the group of bettors went into despair because, according to the MP-GO, they expected a millionaire profit, but ended up with a loss.
“In the antepenultimate round of Serie A of the Brazilian Championship, multiple bets were made. And one of the groups was expected to receive a profit of R$ 2 million for these bets”, said the MP’s promoter.
In an exchange of messages displayed by the channel, one of the still unidentified members of the group appears with a gun announcing what his attitude would be if a player did not do as agreed.
“Tell him here, thread. This one [mostrando uma bala de revólver] it’s for you. This one is for your sister. Yeah, fagot. Here with ‘us’ it’s just like that. Come!” says the man in one of the messages with threats.
