Lawyer Lazara Carvalho, co-founder of the Elo — Include and Transform Movement and the Black Brazilian Advocacy Institute (IANB), has just taken over as chief of staff at the National Secretariat of Justice, in the Lula (PT) government.
The portfolio, which is linked to the Ministry of Justice, is headed by lawyer Augusto de Arruda Botelho.
“My biggest challenge is to overcome the view that some people have that a woman, and especially a black woman, is only in this place to fulfill administrative functions”, says Lazara to the column. “I was invited exactly because of my work in the construction of public policies with a focus on race and gender and aimed at making the justice system an accessible door for all people.”
The lawyer ran last year for the vice-presidency of the OAB-SP alongside Dora Cavalcanti. It was the first time that a ticket made up of two women participated in the election, which was won by criminal lawyer and professor Patricia Vanzolini.
