The Movimento Advogados de Direita Brasil published an open letter against the appointment of Cristiano Zanin to the position of Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), this Wednesday (29). In all, 5,582 lawyers signed the document, asking the Federal Senate to reject the candidate, if he is nominated by President Lula.

In the letter, Movimento Advogados de Direita Brasil recalls Zanin’s unquestionable proximity to President Lula, which would undermine the impartial performance of the function. Zanin was the PT’s lawyer in the legal proceedings resulting from Operation Lava Jato, whose convictions were annulled by the STF.

“It is not, therefore, a purely technical appointment. The choice of the Minister of the Supreme Court is also political, and as a policy related to the judiciary, it is not enough to be only legal, it has to appear to be Justice. Accept the mere restrictive argument that Zanin possesses attributes that give him notable legal knowledge and an unblemished reputation, at least for a large part of the population, is, at the very least, an affront to the morality of the Republic”, wrote the lawyers.

The vacancy that will open on the Court belongs to Ricardo Lewandowski, who announced that he would leave the STF shortly after Easter, even before his 75th birthday (which will occur in May). The choice of a minister for the STF takes place in a process that involves the Executive and Legislative powers. First, there is nomination of the president. Afterwards, the candidate participates in a sabbath session at the Constitution and Justice Commission of the Federal Senate.
