‘They are sadists and misogynists, they have a dislike for women’, says the delegate. Application allows people to communicate in live video transmissions. Lawless network: on Discord, criminals rape and humiliate underage girls In April, a report by Fantástico showed how Discord, a popular app among teenagers, had become a tool to involve young people in an underworld of extreme violence. Now, the show brings a new investigation into the platform’s perverse underworld, a lawless territory where predators prey on minors. “It is important to make it very clear that these are not challenges being practiced by teenagers. These are criminals, the vast majority of whom are of legal age, who use the insecurity of this platform in relation to children and adolescents to commit very serious crimes against these girls”, says prosecutor Maria Fernanda Balsalobra. “They are sadists, misogynists, they have a disgust, a dislike for women”, says the delegate Fábio Pinheiro Lopes. Discord allows people to communicate in live streams of videos within the platform. The victim becomes blackmailed into fulfilling challenges. If she doesn’t accept, intimate photos are leaked. One of the criminals has several storage devices and reveals a cruel collection: “back up of rapable sluts”. In each folder, the name of a victim. There are dozens of girls raped, blackmailed, exposed, catalogued. The aggressors feel protected by anonymity and become increasingly cruel. “Kneel down, bow to me, I’m a f***ing god to you now. You are a slut who really deserves to suffer”, says Izaquiel Tomé dos Santos, known as Dexter, to a teenager. He has been in prison since April. There are reports of ten victims: pictures of naked girls, mutilated with a painful signature, the name Dexter written with a blade on the skin. To the Federal Police, Izaquiel admitted to having blackmailed girls to mutilate themselves. “They had to hide it from the family, especially the injuries they kept on the body of cuts”, explains police chief João Rocha. In addition to the ten victims located by the PF, Fantástico found five others. “We expect parents to talk preventively, look for whether their children have any injuries, if they stay in the room for a long time. Dialogue is important”, emphasizes the delegate. Last Friday (23), the police arrested two criminals who were working on the platform and identified another one, Carlos Eduardo, known as DPE, who is on the run. In addition to the individual accountability of the aggressors, the São Paulo Public Ministry also investigates Discord itself. “We are investigating, through a civil inquiry, the lack of security on the Discord platform. Individual crimes will always occur on the internet. What differentiates it is the detection that structured hate speech is taking place on this platform. A propitious place for them to plan to attack the victims and, above all, to transmit the content of the crime”, declares the São Paulo Public Prosecutor Danilo Orlando. In an interview with Fantástico, the Discord spokesperson said that the platform “does not tolerate hateful behavior”. “We are a free product for over 150 million users around the world, and from time to time, bad content and bad behavior will happen. We are actively working to remove this content,” the spokesperson said. “I would like to emphasize that the vast majority of Brazilian interactions using Discord are positive and healthy. We are proactive and investigate groups that may be involved in threats to children and work to get these bad actors off the platform.” ‘Room Generation’ O child studies specialist Hugo Monteiro Ferreira carried out research on the current social and emotional condition of adolescents and children, interviewing more than three thousand people. “I named it the fourth generation”, says Hugo. “You had a phenomenon that already occurred , and the pandemic has put a ton on that phenomenon. When I go into the internet world, I see people who want to manipulate me, I see elements of violence. I learn to commit suicide, I learn to attack schools, I learn what it’s like to self-harm.” Journalist Letícia Oliveira has been monitoring groups of hate and violence on social networks for ten years. “More and more, they are seeing more extreme content and this ends up leading them to commit atrocities, because they are so desensitized, they are so used to violence . It is urgent that we understand what is happening to try to change this”.
