Jair Bolsonaro wanted a party on his return to the country. He planned a reception in a crowded airport lounge, a parade in an open car and a speech to a crowd. The idea was to stage a kind of heroic comeback, as if the three-month isolation in the US had not been the free choice of a dejected politician.
The program was vetoed by security agencies in Brasilia, but it would not be wise to rule out a not-so-spontaneous breach of protocol. The Bolsonarist experience has already shown that the leader and his followers feed on a childish challenge to authorities and rules in general.
Bolsonaro’s first day on Brazilian soil as a former president will say little about his future or the vigor of the far right. This test will be done in the following 1,284 days, until 2026. This Thursday’s chapter (30) will only be a demonstration of how it intends to be seen.
As a populist movement, Bolsonarism needs a revered leader. The defeat by Lula in 2022 went down badly within the group because the polls broke that image, adding to the discomfort with the absence of the former president during the American self-exile.
Bolsonaro would like the script for his return to be proof that there was no lost popularity in this process. The former president wants to create and maintain the illusion that his name has majority support — an adjective he cannot claim, even though he is one of the most popular politicians in the country.
Allies have been hinting at the platform that Bolsonaro intends to explore in the opposition. The ex-president must mainly seek bad news in the economy to attack Lula’s campaign speech, in addition to confronting the government on issues related to public security. At these times, he will put aside the fiasco of his four years in Planalto.
Bolsonaro, incidentally, will spend the next few times haunted by the past. The ineligibility actions and investigations into the Saudi jewelry will be at the door of the mansion that the PL rented to house it.
