Competitors and lovers of street racing who have registered for the 4th edition of the São Tiago Race, in Mazagão, can collect their kits this Friday (21), at the Zerão Olympic Stadium, in Macapá, guaranteeing their passport for the event. The race – which takes place on Sunday (23) – will have a course of 6 kilometers. The departure will be at 6:30 am, leaving Mazagão Novo for the historic village of Mazagão Velho. Each kit contains a shirt, chip and medal produced by the Secretary of Sports and Leisure (Sedel), which will also ensure hydration for participants and trophies for category champions.
According to the organizers of the sporting event, 500 registrations were opened. “We are going to the 4th edition of the event, which grows every year. Now, with the support of the Government of Amapá, our race has gained even more prestige and security. We will bring together athletes from all over to celebrate the history of the Mazagão community”highlighted Marcel Oliveira, coordinator of the race.
Festivity
The Feast of São Tiago takes place since 1777 and features the appearance of the patron saint as an anonymous soldier, who fought alongside the Christian people against the Moors and ensured victory in the conflict. The story was brought to Amapá from the transplantation of the city of Mazagão in Morocco, Africa, to Brazil.
Tradition includes religious rituals, cavalhadas and open-air theater. Its high point is the staging of the battles on the 24th and 25th of July, when the Day of St. James is celebrated.
