The Collegio de Garantia of the Italian Olympic Committee, Italy’s main sporting body, communicated this Thursday (20) the decision to annul the punishment that stripped Juventus of 15 points in the Italian Championship.
The Turin club had been penalized for tax fraud. The team denies wrongdoing and says its accounting is up to industry standards.
With eight games to go in the Italian competition, the decision will take Juventus from seventh to third in the tournament table, with 59 points, 16 behind leaders Napoli, but back in the Champions League classification zone.
The board’s decision came after the Turin side appealed a ruling handed down by Italy’s football court in January looking at the way the club and several other teams had handled player exchange deals.
The football court also imposed bans from holding Italian football posts on 11 current and former directors of Juventus, including former president Andrea Agnelli.
Partially accepting the team’s appeal, the body did not clear the club of irregularities, but decided that a football court composed of different judges must now open a new process and propose a more adequate punishment.
However, Juventus also face potential sporting penalties, including point deductions, in a separate case. The Italian Football Federation is suing the club over alleged irregularities in its payments to players.
The FIGC ended the investigation last week and must decide whether the club should face another football tribunal.
The sports authorities’ investigations were triggered by investigations by criminal prosecutors in Turin, where the club is based, in a case over alleged false accounting.
A criminal hearing to decide whether to order a trial for Andrea Agnelli, 11 others and the club itself began last month.
