The publishers of the German magazine Die Aktuelle have fired the publisher responsible for publishing a fake interview with Michael Schumacher, generated by artificial intelligence. The Funke media group, owner of the vehicle, released this information on its website and an apology to the former pilot’s family.
The seven-time Formula 1 champion, now 54 years old, has been in prison since suffering a brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013 while enjoying a family vacation in the French Alps. His medical condition is shrouded in mystery, and his wife, Corinna, makes an effort to maintain privacy.
Schumacher’s family had stated that they intended to sue the magazine – which would not be unheard of, as other editions have been deemed offensive. This time, the own media group based in the German city of Essen decided to take action and released them this Saturday (22).
“The report, tasteless and misleading, should never have been published. It in no way meets the standards of journalism that we – and our readers – expect from a publisher like Funke,” said Funke’s director of magazines, Bianca Pohlmann .
“As a result of the publication of the material, there will be immediate personnel consequences. Die Aktuelle editor-in-chief Anne Hoffmann, who assumed journalistic responsibility for the magazine in 2009, will be relieved of her duties as of today,” added Pohlmann.
The last edition of the periodical had on its cover an image of Schumacher smiling, with the headline: “Michael Schumacher, the first interview”. The front page already carried a tip: “It looked deceptively real”. Only in the report itself is it clearer that the false conversation was produced by an artificial intelligence “chat”.
