The Frente Nacional de Luta Campo e Cidade (FNL) movement, headed by a dissident from the Landless Movement, José Rainha Júnior, carried out a series of invasions of rural properties in western São Paulo during the Carnival period. Since Saturday (18), nine farms have been invaded in the municipalities of Marabá, Presidente Epitácio, Mirante do Paranapanema, Rosana, Sandovalina, Presidente Venceslau and Teodoro Sampaio.
Through social networks, the group says that the occupations take place on “land that has already been recognized as public by the Justice, but still remains abandoned without fulfilling its social use”. The FNL demands agility in Incra’s procedures to expropriate new areas.
In a statement, the Association of Soy and Corn Producers of São Paulo (Aprosoja-SP) repudiated the occupations and called on the authorities to act “in a firm and forceful manner in order to demobilize the invasions and criminalize the leaders and others involved in these acts that attack the democratic rule of law”.
Owners expel invaders in Rosana
The president of the Agricultural Parliamentary Front (FPA), deputy Pedro Lupion (PP-PR) classified the acts as a crime: “The right to property is provided for in the Constitution. In one week there have been more invasions than in the entire previous government”. “Incra has 90 million hectares of settlement areas and 110 million hectares of Union areas that can be used for agrarian reform. It doesn’t fit! We, rural producers, want to know what attitudes the government will take and what will be done about this barbarity”, wrote the deputy.
In one of the invaded farms, in Rosana, the owners reacted and removed the invaders on their own. Three vehicles were hit by gunfire. The situation is monitored by the São Paulo Military Police. José Rainha Júnior led land occupations in the Pontal do Paranapanema region in the 1980s and 1990s and was sentenced to 31 years in prison for extortion, conspiracy and embezzlement, but he appealed and is free.
