José Gregori, Minister of Justice under FHC, dies – 09/03/2023 – Power

José Gregori, Minister of Justice and National Secretary of Human Rights in the FHC government and a reference in the defense of democracy, died this Sunday (3), at the age of 92, in São Paulo. He had complications from pneumonia and had been hospitalized for over two months.

Gregori was National Secretary of Human Rights (1997-2000) and former Minister of Justice (2000-2001) during the Fernando Henrique Cardoso (PSDB) administration. The lawyer was also a founding member of the Arns Commission, a group created to monitor human rights violations.

The wake will take place this Monday (4), from 8am to 2pm, at the Funeral Home, in the Bela Vista neighborhood (central region). According to the family, Gregori was conscious until a few hours before death.

Gregori was at the Faculty of Law at USP in 1977 and gave the speech that preceded that of Goffredo da Silva Telles Jr. in the famous “Letter to Brazilians”.

Last year, in the midst of coup threats by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), he signed the “Letter to Brazilian women and men in defense of the democratic rule of law” and, in an interview with Sheetsaid: “To the new generations I say: the democratic rule of law is like 5G”.
